Taraca
From the choco crumbs, bircher muesli, granola, and peanut butter (for those who like that kind of thing) to the outrageously brilliant vegan scrambles eggs or toasted sandwiches and quesadillas, Taraca Resto Bar serves up some truly energy-boosting power breakfasts, with many vegan options to choose from. It is rustic and casual, located right on the banks of the Scurda River.
The location is perfect for watching the ancient city walls if you manage to nab one of the few tables on the outdoor terrace. If not, don’t be concerned, the indoors is a lovely place to be as well, wanting you to spend all morning inside planning your day and sipping some of the best smoothies and juices in town.
Marenda Grill House
From the traditional omelets in all its guises to oatmeal and the wonderfully artery-clogging Montenegrin fry-up, this steakhouse surprisingly ticks all the breakfast boxes, besides being primarily known for its dry-aged steaks and burgers.
It is located just a 5-minute walk from the main Sea Gate. Few visitors venture beyond Kotors’s city walls in search of a meal but you may well find picky locals directing their steps towards this eatery if you do. A freshly brewed Turkish coffee is not easy to find in Kotor, you can be called lucky then that the Marenda Grill House has it on its menu.
Sea Gate Kotor
Built in 1555 during the rule of the Republic of Venice, the Sea Gate in Kotor was previously only accessible by the sea. It opens onto the Square of Arms.
Platanus
Platanus is one of Kotor’s most popular breakfast spots among the locals. Located right on the Dobrota coastal promenade, their outdoor terrace couldn’t be a better place to sit and catch some morning rays over a cup of java. The establishment is named after the huge plane tree which offers ample shade on scorching summer days.
You will find a good range of international favorites on their well-crafted breakfast menu, including shakshuka, eggs Benedict, scrambled eggs with avocado or truffles, and smoked salmon. The coffee is also some of the best in Kotor. Platanus is very child-friendly because once the kids have finished eating, they can play freely on the adjacent playground.
Pier65
Pier65 is where you should go if you are looking for a serene nook to hunker down in and chit-chat. This Turkish restaurant does not serve breakfast until 09:30, so if you are an early bird, consider coming for a meal later on in the day; their lunch and dinner menu is also formidable. Inside, checkerboard flooring and exposed stone walls, it’s a small space with only about eight tables or so but it’s charming and warm.
Outside, the perfect quiet corner, sheltered private away from the herds of tourists one street further. They don’t have a gigantic breakfast selection but they offer Menemen (Turkish-style scrambled eggs poached in tomato sauce), a range of omelets, and a breakfast platter with fresh vegetables, fries, cheese, and honey. Prices are reasonable and the quality does not get much better.
Pepe Nero
Pepe Nero is a true hidden treasure in the heart of the old town. It is one of the best breakfast spots in Kotor if you want to splurge. On their breakfast menu, you’ll find traditional Montenegrin egg dishes alongside international classics (try Avocado Benedict or Poached Eggs Royal), but besides that, also healthy options such as oatmeal with chocolate & coconut chips, nuts, and apples.
The coffee is also some of the best in Kotor and pairs well with one of the delicious croissant sandwiches. Pepe Nero is hard to find in the maze of Kotor’s narrow streets and squares. It occupies a calm corner, perfect for relaxing over your breakfast and taking in the atmosphere of the milk square.
