Njegusi

As you snake your way up the switchbacks of the Kotor Serpentine road into the sheltered Njegusi plain, the rugged mountainscape and dramatic rock faces to all sides are easily noticed. Njegusi is a compact and sparsely-populated village at the foot of Mount Lovcen, home to a small and close-knit community of farmers, ham- and cheesemakers.

Njegusi may be famous for being the birthplace of Njegos, but it is also known for some exquisite culinary produce: Njegusi Prosciutto and Njegusi Cheese, sold at locally-owned shops and taverns in the town center. There is also the Njeguski Steak, a folded veal schnitzel filled with ham and cheese from Njegusi.

The savory Njegusi Prosciutto is made in a long and painstaking process in the small hamlet of Njegusi. It plays an important role in Montenegrin cuisine.

Outdoor activities here include zip-lining, biking, and hiking. Another advantage: the village sits near the Lovcen National Park, making it a fabulous base for travelers wanting to discover some genuinely stunning vistas and mountain landscapes. A 90-minute hike takes you to the top of Jezerski Vrh where the Njegos Mausoleum is located.

Reward your efforts with an energizing snack and drink at the small mountain restaurant next to the mausoleum and enjoy some of the finest panoramic views in Montenegro, extending to Croatia. You can stay overnight at this peaceful, stripped-back hideaway, but if it’s comfort and luxury you want, choose a hotel in nearby Kotor.

There is no better way to elevate the taste of high-quality prosciutto than with Njegusi Cheese. This mildly sour cheese variant is traditionally produced from sheep milk. Its refined taste earned it a reputation beyond Montenegro’s borders. The culinary magazine Taste Atlas listed it as one of the world’s best cheeses from sheep milk.
