Best things to do in Herceg Novi

Things to do in Herceg Novi

Many tour guides describe Herceg Novi as a large ‘open-air museum‘ where you can experience ‘the magic of past centuries, as evidenced by its ancient fortresses, cobblestoned piazzas, and historic churches’ anywhere you go. Once a favorite summer residence for many popular writers and artists of the Yugoslav era, including Nobel-Prize-winning Ivo Andric, Herceg Novi has by and large, kept its captivating Adriatic coastal charm.

Not surprisingly, the narrow coastal stretch surrounding the ‘town of verdant greenery and eternal sunshine‘ is slowly becoming a hotbed for luxurious beach clubs, five-star hotels, and cliffside villas, as demonstrated by the recent inauguration of the Portonovi Marina and resort village. However, this up-and-coming holiday destination still has many peaceful and unpretentious corners to escape the crowds.

  • Enjoy panoramic views of Herceg Novi from the Kanli Kula Fortress – or the nearby Spanjola Fortress

  • Take a boat trip to the Lustica Peninsula and explore its hidden gems: beaches, submarine tunnels, Austro-Hungarian fortresses, olive farms, and more
  • Raise a glass of Vranac Wine, a dark and vivacious red that was Ivo Andric’s favorite after-work drink, best enjoyed on Gradska Kafana’s outdoor terrace

Luxuriate by the Sea

Herceg Novi City Beach

The warm and crystalline Adriatic Sea is calling! In the early morning or off-season, finding a quaint spot on the beach for placing your towel is unsurprisingly easy. The Pet seaside walkway connecting the neighborhoods of Igalo and Meljine runs six kilometers along the water’s edge, revealing many picturesque spots en route.

During the peak holiday season when free beach acreage is scarce, it’s best to dodge the masses by visiting one of the beaches on the remote Lustica Peninsula. Some of the local beachgoer’s favorite gems are Arza Beach, Forte Rose II Beach, and Miriste Beach, but there are several other ‘plazas’ well worth a visit and waiting for you to explore.

Iberostar Herceg Novi Beach

Marvel at the Church of St. Michael

Herceg Novi Church

One of the best locations for soaking up Herceg Novi’s docile Mediterranean vibes is the Bellavista Square in the heart of the old town. It is ringed by a handful of quaint cafes and restaurants, and dotted with a centuries-old drinking fountain and, of course, the picturesque Church of St. Michael the Archangel, an Orthodox edifice with free entry.

We recommend visiting Bellavista Square and marveling at the church at different times of the day. While in the morning hours, you’ll share the cafe’s outdoor seating areas with old-town inhabitants over a cup of espresso, midday brings typical sightseers, and the evening is when the church is basked in a magical light, perfect for taking pictures!

Herceg Novi Old Town
The Historic Center

Climb the 100 or so steps from the promenade to reach Herceg Novi’s old town, for a charming assortment of historic buildings, galleries, cafes, and restaurants.

Watch the Sunset from Spanjola Fortress

For a more historic yet low-key golden hour alternative to bustling waterfront tavernas and bars, head to the Spanish Fortress (‘Spanjola’), an abandoned medieval defense stronghold located above Herceg Novi, and enjoy a magnificent sunset over the boat-filled Skver Harbor, plus beautiful close of the day vistas over the entrance to the Bay of Kotor. Spanjola Fortress is either reachable by vehicle or foot via a scenic hiking trail.

Climb the Stairs to the Clock Tower

Herceg Novi Sahat Kula Clock Tower

One of Herceg Novi’s high-profile landmarks, the ‘Sahat Kula’ clock tower (also known as Sat Kula) is surely a beacon in its historic townscape. Built in the 17th century by Ottoman Sultan ‘Mahmud’ (Herceg Novi was under Turkish Rule for more than two centuries), it also serves as a gorgeous observation deck – accessible via a narrow spiral staircase. Info: Herceg Novi’s coat of arms features this stunning clock tower as its central element.

A Montenegro-paced healthy breakfast or savory lunch followed by some serious unwinding at the Portonovi Beach Club at the One & Only Resort, a Kerzner International property. Tour the Moric Olive Farm

Lustica Peninsula Montenegro

Much of the rolling hills of the Lustica Peninsula are planted with olive trees that can be explored thanks to the Tici Olive Farm tour. The autochthonous ‘žutica‘ variety (large, zesty, juicy olives boasting a fragrant skin with 25% oleic acid) is unique to Montenegro and parts of southern Croatia, and the Moric family has been cultivating this and other sorts here for more than three centuries.

Dig deep into the world of ‘masline‘ (Montenegrin: ‘olives’) by signing up for a tour of their organic farm (for groups of up to six people), sample extra-virgin & organic olive oil alongside other fresh produce grown on their small homestead. Learn about olive farming and oil production, and how this Mediterranean fruit is picked and used in the local cuisine.

Stop by the Savina Monastery

Herceg Novi Savina Monastery view

There is a small series of steps to be negotiated for visiting the 11th-century (Orthodox) Savina Monastery but the rewards are unparalleled bay views and tasty local produce – including honey, wine, and herbal liquor – from the on-site organic monastery shop. The walls and ceilings of the church to the left (the compound consists of 3 churches) are covered with surprisingly well-preserved fresco paintings in vibrant blues, greens, crimson, and rich ocher.

If you would like to continue exploring the trails of the adjacent Savina forest, wear proper sneakers or walking shoes. This green and lush oasis extends from the neighborhood of Meljine towards the historic center of Herceg Novi. You can also combine a visit to the monastery with a wine-tasting tour in the nearby Savina winery. Our Tip: For the best views consider climbing up to the viewing platform in front of the upper monastery church.

Book a Local Tennis Court

Even during the peak of the sweltering summer season, you can still hear the rhythmic interaction of tennis rackets, balls, and the clay surface around Topla, a neighborhood of Herceg Novi backing the coastal promenade. Whether you are looking to challenge your partner or friend, or, work with a trainer to improve your backhand while on vacation, the SBS Tennis Center offers four courts that be rented by the hour.

Dip into Herceg Novi’s Past

Ivo Andric House Herceg Novi

Located in a narrow side street above the Topla tunnel, Herceg Novi’s local history museum houses many ancient weapons, artifacts, and a collection of traditional attire, plus many photos giving insight into the town’s development over the centuries, and a separate section dedicated to ancient Illyro-Greek history.

In this neighborhood, you can also check out the House of the Nobel Prize Winner Ivo Andric for a curated compilation of texts, pictures, and even a replica of his Nobel Prize, or, time your visit right for one of the cultural events (poetry nights, open-air cinema, concerts) that are frequently organized here.

Challenge Yourself on the Orjen Trails

You must have a good head for heights to tackle the celebrated and well-marked hiking trails starting at the ‘Za Vratlom’ mountain lodge, an iconic shelter and meeting point for mountaineers of all countries, located within half an hour’s driving distance of Herceg Novi. Most of the trails run along the edge of the Bay of Kotor far above the coast, passing wild grazing animals and incredible viewing points along the way.

For an easy yet scenic hike, and just a bit of a challenge, head to Kamenski Kabau. The trail is only four kilometers long, with 400 meters of elevation gain. The breathtaking views of the bay and the Prevlaka Peninsula in Croatia from the top are surely worth the effort. You can then continue via Odijevo (1571 m) to Sljeme and finally back to the ‘Za Vrtatlom’ mountain hut.

Enjoy a Romantic Dinner at Rosemarine

Augusta Terrace Herceg Novi

When the sun slowly disappears behind the yacht-filled marina, Restaurant Rosemarine is one of the most idyllic places to be for a classy dinner in Herceg Novi. Set at the lobby level of the 5-star Lazure Hotel in Meljine, this restaurant occupies both the charming inner courtyard and part of the sea-facing al-fresco terrace, giving off sophisticated and peaceful vacation vibes.

Groups of friends, but especially couples on date night, love to wash down sushi sets, scallops & tuna ceviche with a few glasses of local Chardonnay or mixology-crafted signature cocktails here and then luxuriate in this pristine setting after the plates have been cleared and the live musicians have started playing.

Get Pampered at the Chenot Spa

To make sure that you actually relax and unwind, your holiday in Herceg Novi is supposed to also include some serious spoiling experiences like visiting a Spa. The pampering treatments at Chenot Espace, One & Only Portonovi’s onsite wellness center, include customized fitness and facial care programs that follow the cult-favorite Chenot method. The good news is, that you don’t have to be a hotel guest to take advantage of these fantastically rejuvenating rituals.

Try Scuba Diving

A small, almost uninhabited peninsula across the bay from Herceg Novi, Lustica’s waters are every diver’s paradise. Halfway between Zanjice Beach and Mamula Island, you’ll find the remains of the shipwreck ‘PBR-512’, a Yugoslav patrol ship that was sunk here in 1983 during navy exercises, and now lies at a depth of 25 meters, ready to be explored.

Most visiting divers are also interested in delving into the now-defunct submarine tunnels, which are easily accessible from Herceg Novi harbor. What’s more, in nearby areas, scuba-goers may spot cannonballs, and large anchors, alongside mooray eels and octopuses. Plus, the local diving centers issue globally recognized PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) certificates upon completion of their programs, giving you just one more reason to dive while in Herceg Novi.

Escape to Vrbanj Adventure Park

For vacationing thrill seekers, the Vrbanj Adventure Park is easily accessible by car from Herceg Novi (25 kilometers via a paved road), offering a handful of trails for adults and children older than 6. Far away from the yacht-filled marinas and packed beaches, this is an untamed and peaceful area of Montenegro where time stands still and hours pass climbing over suspension bridges and zipping through the pleasantly cool beech forests.

Enjoy a cold one at the park’s bar or a savory meal at ‘Konoba Gusti’ in Vrbanj. This is also the place where some of Orjen’s most picturesque hiking trails start, including the ascent to the Subra Amphitheatre, which includes the peaks of Kabao (1553 m), Subra (1673 m), and Domiter measuring 1593 meters, and Veliki Kabao (also known as Zubacki Kabao), Orjen’s highest peak (1894 m).

Enjoy a Leading Leisure Hotspot

Gradska Kafana Herceg Novi

Yes, most of Gradska Kafana’s patrons are attracted by the panoramic views of the old town and the Bay of Kotor from their lofty outdoor terrace, but this traditional Grand Cafe is also known for its delicious cuisine. Set on romantic Njegoseva Street, and just a pigeon’s spit away from the clock tower, it’s an obvious choice for a short break from sightseeing.

After a cappuccino, craft beer, or grilled octopus dish, explore the shops in the historic center selling jewelry, clothes, souvenirs, and artwork. Explore Kanli Kula Fortress and then pop into the Bulgakov Museum, which is dedicated to the life of the famous Russian writer and playwright, or one of the old-town galleries before heading down the stairs to the charming marina for a seafood dish on the seafront.

Go Beach-hopping by boat

Forte Rose Beach II

Accessible by boat from Skver Harbor (or car via the much longer road via the Lustica Peninsula), Miriste Beach feels pretty much like a piece of paradise with crystal-clear waters for swimming and snorkeling. Striking views of Mamula Island and across the bay, and a tranquil atmosphere is all you need in the peak of the summer season.

You can either charter a boat at one of Herceg Novi’s marinas, book a private boat tour, or, simply hop on a water taxi going back and forth between Lustica’s beaches and the mainland. Enjoy views of the pristine coastal landscape of Montenegro and Croatia as you cruise through the stunning Bay of Kotor.

Wine-Tasting and Lunch in the Hills

The wine scene in Coastal Montenegro has made giant strides in the past two decades against all odds, with near-perpendicular hillside terraces posing noteworthy challenges to local wine growers. To become more well-versed in the autochthonous grape varieties (such as Vranac and Krstac) and production methods, prearrange a tasting tour up in the hills above Herceg Novi, followed by a wine-friendly cheese and charcuterie board with award-winning wines, including their smooth and full-bodied Chardonnay Barrique.

Explore the Bay on Stand-up Paddleboard

SUP and Kayak Rental Herceg Novi

In summer, every day is bright and breezy at Herceg Novi’s busy urban beaches, but you’ll get more magnificent Riviera views from the water. Rent a stand-up paddleboard or kayak from one of the neighborhood rental shops, stay long enough on the water, and enjoy watching the sunset behind the Bay of Kotor.

Visit Rose

Rose Montenegro

The weathered yet incredibly picturesque old fishing village of Rose on the Lustica Peninsula offers a glimpse of what the area must have looked and felt like before tourists started discovering Montenegro decades ago. It has a small harbor and a pretty waterfront promenade lined with sea captains’ homes and a few quaint taverns.

Rose boasts a series of picturesque beaches overlooking the bay and hides many gems, including ancient fortresses (one of which has been turned into a chic boutique hotel) and abandoned Yugoslav-era submarine pens. Catch the water taxi from Skver Harbor in Herceg Novi and book into Forte Rose for a laid-back day by the sea and a fishy lunch.

Enjoy an Oyster Feast in Josice

Perast Oyster Farm

Home to one of the few oyster farms along Montenegro’s Adriatic coast, the Kamenari Oyster Farm is known for harvesting palatable oysters and other types of shellfish. You can try this briny, sweet local specialty either oven-roasted and topped with garlic and Parmigiano or raw and simply garnished with lemon juice or Tabasco sauce. Most ingredients for their tiny menu are collected straight from the Adriatic and homemade white wine flows too, of course, on their panoramic seaside terrace.

Enjoy Culinary Delights at a Petting Zoo

Kids will love the pony rides (private horseback riding lessons available) and the petting zoo, a small enclosed area filled with rabbits, llamas, goats, deer, kangaroos, and even two monkeys. Furthermore, there’s a well-equipped kid’s playground and a top-notch restaurant overlooking the bay.

Made with locally sourced meats, seafood, and vegetables from the picturesque village of Zvinje and its surroundings, Ranch ARYEN offers incredibly flavorful dishes; be sure not to miss the Ribeye or Beef Steak garnished with roasted potatoes and rosemary from their garden, shrimp-stuffed squids, and traditional Montenegrin Njeguski Steak.

Play a Round of Golf

Embark on a classy golf adventure and challenge your game set against the verdant green backdrop of the Lustica Peninsula, with postcard-worthy vistas competing for your attention. Easy on the eyes and designed by no other than Gary Player, the Peaks is Montenegro’s first 18-hole golf course. Its forgiving fairways and greens can make even high-handicap golfers feel like they can swing with the old masters.

Shop at the Farmer’s Market

Herceg Novi Farmers Market

The Gradska Pijaca is small but definitely worth visiting if you’re looking for a local farmer’s market with a good assortment of domestic produce. From 7 am to 3 pm, locals and visitors head to the old town to buy everything from Njegusi prosciutto, homemade wine, extra-virgin olive oil, honey, and flowers.

The farmer’s market sits on a quiet side street, just off the clock tower, where the pretty al-fresco terraces of the local restaurants and cafes invite shoppers to take a welcoming break for a morning coffee and breakfast. It is also recommended for those wanting to buy ocean-fresh fish and seafood.

Attend a Local Event

Herceg Novi Kanli Kula

Local festivals abound in Herceg Novi, especially during the peak summer season. This is when the town’s main piazzas are filled with people enjoying an amazing atmosphere at one of the free open-air concerts – along with some complimentary wine and grilled fish. Everybody, from locals to tourists of all ages, is included in these family-friendly events that regularly draw thousands of visitors.

The Mimosa Festival in February equates to two weeks of concerts, fun for children, culinary, sports, and cultural events, including a Venetian carnival parade. Held every year in the first week of August, the Herceg Novi Film Festival has a long tradition and a loyal following. If you are a music fan, make sure not to miss out on the Guitar Art Summer Fest and the Operosa Montenegro, a popular Opera Festival, both organized on Kanli Kula’s scenic summer stage during the warm summer months,

Take Sailing Lessons

watersports in Montenegro

Sailing is one of the best ways to explore Herceg Novi’s beautiful coastline. However, from the outside, learning how to set sail and navigate the oceans might seem like a frightening and extravagant pursuit. While mastering the ins and outs of sailing certainly takes years of consistent practice, the basic skills can be acquired quite swiftly.

Hopeful captains vacationing in Herceg Novi should consider taking lessons and earning internationally accepted certifications. Montenegro Outdoors is a husband and wife team of sailing enthusiasts offering practical on-the-water training while the Jugole Grakalic sailing school provides multi-day sailing education to participants of all ages.

End Your Day with Sladoled (Icecream)

Herceg Novi Promenade Cafe

Few things in life are better than a cold, creamy treat after a long day exploring Herceg Novi’s beaches, cobblestone streets, and centuries-old landmarks. We recommend the family-run ‘Do-Do Cafe’ right on the seaside promenade, a traditional, family-run shop that is also very popular with the local population and where you can taste flavors such as mango, raspberry, and dark chocolate. Good pancakes, pizza, and desserts, too!
