ToggleLocated at the narrowest point that connects the inner to the outer bay of Kotor, Verige Beach is a beautiful shingle strand offering you soothing, tranquil scenery and a small beach bar. Often overlooked by tourists heading to more mainstream beaches, this is a favorite with Montenegrin holidaymakers.
The beach faces out into the Bay of Kotor and towards the Our Lady of the Rocks Island opposite Perast. While the shingle beach itself is rather unspectacular, it’s about more than just placing your towel somewhere and sunbathing. The almost translucent bay slopes gently away into emerald green and deep blue hues.
Our Lady of the Rocks is a beautiful island and church in the Bay of Kotor. It sits between the Verige Strait and the coastal town of Perast.
Perast is a charming coastal town between Risan and Kotor. It is known for its beautiful Baroque architecture and stunning natural setting.
The warm shallow waters are rich in shells and marine vegetation while the underock formations further afield are pleasant snorkeling and diving grounds. It gets deep quickly, no wonder that all those yachts and cruise ships pass here effortlessly.
Besides that, Verige Beach is less accommodating to families with young children because of the narrow road to arrive, the sharper shingles and pebbles, and the fact that the facilities on site are limited. There are no water sports equipment to rent here either.
A narrow coastal road that connects Tivat to Kotor on the foot of Mount Vrmac passes here and might pose a challenge for inexperienced drivers. This ancient road is very narrow and there are many sections where two vehicles can barely pass each other. Arriving and docking by boat at the pier is possible.
Should you visit by car, it’s worth stopping along the way to take in the beautiful UNESCO-protected scenery and capture it on film. There is significantly less traffic in the form of buses, cars, and bikes in the early morning hours, and you will find plenty of free parking space along the road to the beach.
With sharp and slippery gravel underfoot, bringing water shoes will keep your feet protected. Due to its geographical position, the currents are also relatively strong here, so keep that in mind if you are not a good swimmer – there is no lifeguard on duty here.
Being one of the more remote beaches, you won’t find any showers or changing cabins ashore but the beach bar comes with a toilet. Wheelchair users will find it impossible to ascend down to the beach from the unpaved walkway along the narrow stairs and steep terrain.
Besides swimming and snorkeling, people come here for an escape, passing the time of the day by unwinding, reading, and gazing at cruise ships passing in and out of the bay. Because the Verige Strait is only 340 meters wide, it feels like you can almost touch them, they appear that close before your eyes.
On both sides of the beach are the tiny churches of Our Lady of Snow and Our Lady of Angels, which are just a short walk away. They both feature unique roofs, made of overlapping stone slabs. The latter offers breathtaking panoramic views of the bay and the islands.
Recline and watch the yachts and cruise ships pass through the Verige Strait. This is the narrowest part of the entire bay.
The Bay of Kotor offers a gorgeous coastal landscape that is perfect for kayaking and SUPs but you will have to bring your gear because there is none for hire here. In the evening, Verige Beach is one of the best spots for a cocktail or aperitif while the sky turns red and orange, creating a beautiful backdrop for the yachts and cruise ships.
Some adventurers enjoy walking along the cliffs and hiking to the abandoned forts (Fort Verige and Fort Bijeli Pijesak) which can only be accessed via a heavily overgrown jungle-like path. The reward comes in the form of stunning vistas. Others enjoy the short walk to neighboring Stoliv, a quaint and beautiful coastal town.
The Bay of Kotor connects Montenegro’s most scenic coastal towns and villages along an incredible fjord-like coastline.
Find a comfortable white chair at the Verige Beach Bar and pair a homemade hamburger, salad, or sandwich with a refreshing drink as the waves slap against the shoreline. And while the bar only has a modest food offering, it will have everything you need for a relaxing day by the sea.
Luckily, the playlists are well-chosen and the chilled-out tunes go well with the stunning coastal landscapes. The bar attracts younger beachgoers who come here to luxuriate in the sun and experience the beauty of the Bay of Kotor far away from the crowds.
