Watersports in Montenegro

Montenegro is one of those spots where it just makes sense to engage in water sports. With its incredible coastal landscapes, the mild Mediterranean weather, soft breezes, warm sea water temperatures, and busy beaches it is only logical that more and more beachgoers want to escape to faraway coves, be it by boat, kayak, or jet-ski.

Snorkelling

Discover the mesmerizing underwater world with all its unique and beautiful marine life, including fish, octopus, crabs, and lobsters. This is the perfect alternative for everyone that finds scuba diving too scary, and all it really takes is a mask and a snorkel. Snorkelling is very popular in Montenegro due to the calm, crystal-clear water and rugged shoreline. If you don’t have your own gear, you can buy it from one of the small shops found in all coastal resorts or at Intersport, a sports retailer present in all major towns featuring a wide range of equipment.

Sailing and Yachting

Nautical tourism in Montenegro has been steadily increasing in popularity due to its varied coastline and the construction of several new marinas. Alongside first-class port infrastructure, the demand for yacht charters has been growing. You’ll find many charter companies offering everything from sailing boats, to catamarans, and fancy motor yachts for hire.

Dramatic coastal landscapes, a mild climate, and top-notch nautical infrastructure are some of the reasons why yachting in Montenegro is on the rise.

Scuba Diving

Montenegro offers some of the most compelling diving sites in the region, including shipwrecks, sunken aircraft, beautiful reefs, cliffs, and sea caves – for divers of all skill levels. More than a dozen or so scuba diving centers can be found across Montenegro, with at least one in every major coastal town.

Get your introductory scuba experience under the guidance of a certified professional or enroll in one of the beginner courses and get PADI certified. Only people with diver training can go to one of the thrilling dive sites. If you are already experienced, join an organized day or night dive – equipment will be provided by the dive centers.

There are special courses for children as well as advanced open water courses. While the easier dives mostly start right from the beach, the more alluring sites are further afield and require a drop-off by boat. Most people visit Montenegro during the summer season when the Adriatic Sea is pleasantly warm at an average of 23 to 26 degrees.

Windsurfing & Kitesurfing

There is one major hotspot in Montenegro where the conditions are optimal for wind- and kitesurfing. At the southern flank of Long Beach, close to Ulcinj, the wind blows from noon sideonshore with an average speed of 18 knots. The best wind occurs from May through September, making these months the best for a surfing holiday.

The seawater temperatures reach highs of up to 28°C in August. Long Beach is the longest stretch of sand in Montenegro – 13 kilometers long and 60 meters wide. What also makes it ideal for kite- and windsurfing is the shallow entry into the water; it takes about 100 meters before it gets deep.

At Long Beach, one entire section is exclusively dedicated to surfers and the infrastructure overall is good. Several surf schools take advantage of the favorable winds and offer different skill-level courses. Of course, equipment is available for hire, and lots of fun and upbeat music in the laid-back, on-site beach bars.

Jet Skiing

Jet Skis are soaring in popularity in Montenegro and it is easy to see why: you can reach hidden beaches quickly, and get an adrenaline boost while satisfying your cravings for freedom. Cutting through waves in the saddle of a jet ski can even be quite thrilling with no clear destination in mind.

Driving a jet ski requires a personal watercraft license in Montenegro and some safety regulations must be followed such as not piercing through safe swim areas and wearing a life jacket. Jet Ski rentals can be found on many beaches and marinas. If you want to improve your jet-ski skills or master advanced techniques, take the 1-Day course at the Porto Montenegro Yacht Club which will earn you a PWC certificate.

Kayaks, SUPs, and Water Bikes

Kayaks, stand-up paddles, and even water bikes are common sites at Montenegro’s beaches and can be hired by the hour or as part of a tour. When the water is calm, exploring the wild and rugged coastline on your own or with friends is a lot of fun, and you can always dip into the water to refresh yourself far from the crowds. Guided half or full-day trips are the ultimate alternative but they are not for the beginner.

Parasailing & Waterskiing

Parasail flights (tandem or solo) launch you 250 meters into the sky, offering phenomenal vistas of Montenegro’s coastal towns, the azure-blue Adriatic, and picturesque islands leaping below. Towed behind a jet ski or motor boat, you’ll gradually ascend and then smoothly float over the sea – Budva and Becici Beach are the two most famous spots for parasailing and waterskiing in Montenegro.
