ToggleCrvena Stijena Beach
Just a leap away from Sveti Stefan – an island south of Budva connected to the mainland via a narrow causeway – Crvena Stijena (‘Red Cliff Beach‘) derives its name from the burnt-sienna-colored cliffs enclosing pebbles of the same composition and, together with the fragrant Aleppo pines and cypresses, make for some severely dramatic scenery.
Because this roughly 200-meter-long narrow stretch can only be accessed via a dirt track through pine forests or by kayak/boat on a day tour, Crvena Stijena Beach stays fairly tranquil, even in high season, although sunset brings the typical bikini-clad girls who come to strike a pose in front of the picturesque sea arch against Sveti Stefan Island and the electric-blue Adriatic in the background.
Apart from a row of sun loungers and parasols and an on-site beach bar, there aren’t many facilities either, so be sure to bring plenty of sun cream, water, and snorkeling gear – there is a small islet just off the coast, known for its beautiful underwater landscapes and rich biodiversity; you might even spot some Moray eels or octopuses.
Budva
One of the largest and most popular coastal towns in Montenegro, Budva is ‘vibrant’ with a quirky ‘Eastern European’ charm loved for its sunny beaches, history, and culture.
Things to do
Off the bitumen, secluded Crvena Stijena Beach is ideal for serious vacationists craving striking scenery and a sense of escape. Snorkeling and swimming are popular here – the adventurous love to swim laps around the small islet and jump off its rocky outcrops. Neighboring Sveti Stefan has great beach bars for sundowners, while the coastline in the direction of Budva offers a great hiking ground.
Sveti Stefan
Discover Sveti Stefan, a small coastal resort close to Budva, known for its ultra-luxurious resort island and pristine beaches, currently managed by AMAN.
Safety and Access
Beachgoers will be able to leave their car in the car park behind the beach and walk the remaining 100 meters or so. From the Adriatic coastal road, coming either from Bar or Budva, you’ll need to drive down a winding road and transit the Crvena Glavica campsite first, before you can finally glide through those clean, azure waters of this red-pebbled wonder.
Many visitors like to wear water shoes because large slippery rocks make the entry somewhat difficult, and it’s not a beach recommended for young children or anyone with mobility impairments. For a less demanding beach experience, head to neighboring Sveti Stefan Beach or Becici.
Sveti Stefan Beach
Cut in two halves by the stone causeway leading from the mainland to the resort island, Sveti Stefan Beach is certainly one of Montenegro’s prettiest.
Becici Beach
Sunbathe, splash around, snorkel, or arrange scuba diving lessons on Becici Beach, conveniently located within footwalk distance of Budva.
Restaurants
There’s a laidback beach bar right on the beach, for those seeking shade and a quick bite. Bankada, a roadside restaurant, has been open for a decade in Blizikuce and permits eating out on their panoramic al-fresco terrace (vistas are great from indoors, too) overlooking Sveti Stefan – without breaking the bank – and the added benefit of staying open year-round, when some of the coastal restaurants hibernate for the winter season.
Pastrovica Dvori is appreciated by foodies and wine connoisseurs for its zesty homemade wine, as well as the honest Adriatic cuisine, friendly service, and ultra-welcoming ambiance. Combine a round of swimming and relaxing down by the sea with a delicious lunch on their romantic garden terrace.
Hotels on Crvena Stijena Beach
There are no hotels on Crvena Stijena Beach itself, but there is a campsite right behind it. A good range of accommodations is available in neighboring Sveti Stefan, where there are some lovely self-catering properties, boutique hotels, and luxury stays, most notably the Aman Sveti Stefan and Villa Geba.
Villa Edelweiss is a simple but very decent 3-star hotel, hosting just a couple of rooms with a traditional yet sleek Montenegrin style and providing superb views due to its hillside setting. For a more beach-friendly hotel, Hotel California is a good 5-star option with an intimate feel, sitting right on the beachfront, and offering panoramic views of Sveti Stefan.
With its cluster of commodious holiday homes boasting – private or communal – outdoor pools, located in the mountains above Sveti Stefan, the Carsko Selo complex is just a 10-minute drive away from Crvena Stijena Beach. If you are looking for contemporary rooms, an enviable infinity pool, and a classy on-site restaurant, dishing up Mediterranean delights, the 4-star Vivid Blue Serenity Resort is certainly worth consideration.
Budva Riviera
Welcome to the Budva Riviera, a 27-kilometer-long stretch of Montenegrin coastline, known primarily for its pristine beaches and pretty coastal towns.
Surrounding Areas
Crvena Stijena Beach is surrounded by striking pine-covered rocky cliffs and a series of beautiful coves with coastal towns on both sides. The natural landscapes here are pristine and stunning – you’re on the Budva Riviera after all – and it’s pure enjoyment just to drive around in your car or motorcycle and admire its beauty.
The small coastal resort of Sveti Stefan is quiet yet charming, with a children’s playground and a scenic coastal pathway connecting it to Milocer Beach. Becici is a family-friendly seaside town with a pretty walkway lined with restaurants and shops, and plenty of watersports, including parasailing and jet skiing.
